Magnetic Chair - Functional Magnetic Stimulation

Urinary incontinence, or uncontrolled urine leakage, occurs when the pelvic and bladder muscles do not work properly or are not coordinated enough due to weakness or overactivity. This common and unpleasant problem can affect people of all ages and both sexes. In younger women, the most common form of incontinence is stress incontinence, which occurs due to reduced pelvic floor muscles function, which weakens the urinary retention mechanism. On the other hand, older women are more likely to suffer from urge incontinence, in which there is an uncontrolled leakage of urine after a sudden and urgent need to urinate, caused by an overactive bladder. Patients with this condition often have to urinate more than eight times a day, including during the night. Older women often experience a combination of stress and urge incontinence, which is called mixed urinary incontinence.

Why is functional magnetic stimulation (FMS) important and how does it work?

The magnetic chair is an important method because it allows for a very effective and acceptable treatment of various forms of urinary incontinence and other pelvic floor muscles dysfunctions in women and men by applying functional magnetic stimulation on a professional Magneto STYM device. It is a proven method for the treatment of urinary incontinence that was approved by the US FDA in June 1998.

The electromagnetic field works by causing deep stimulation of muscle structures, i.e. repeated contractions of certain pelvic floor muscles, which achieves an effect similar to that of Kegel exercises for the pelvic floor muscles. During stimulation, the patient focuses on muscle contractions, which allows for a simpler and more practical way of learning how to perform these exercises correctly. Electromagnetic stimulation suppresses involuntary contractions of the smooth muscle within the bladder wall, while simultaneously increasing the tone of the internal circular muscle of the urethra (urethral sphincter).

No special preparation is required for the treatment. During the treatment, the patient is fully clothed, sitting relaxed in a chair, with no contact with the skin. Treatments can be performed two to three times a week for 20 to 30 minutes, and improvement can be expected after just a few treatments.

What are the advantages and effects of functional magnetic stimulation (FMS)?

Functional magnetic stimulation is a non-invasive, painless, simple and very effective method suitable for all types of urinary and fecal incontinence, and no adverse effects have been recorded in the therapeutic application of the electromagnetic field so far. It is also more effective than electrostimulation and therefore suitable for those patients for whom electrotherapy is not suitable. In addition, it significantly improves the rehabilitation process after surgeries in the urogenital area or after childbirth, and also helps patients with sexual dysfunction and chronic pain in the pelvic and lumbar spine, stimulating muscles and accelerating circulation without direct contact with the skin.

Therefore, the effects of magnetic stimulation include:

  • increasing the strength and endurance of the sphincter and pelvic floor muscles
  • improving sexual intercourse, erection and the ability to achieve orgasm
  • improving the contraction of the groin and gluteal muscles
  • treating pain in the pelvis and lower back

What are the indications for functional magnetic stimulation (FMS)?

The program and course of treatment is decided by a specialist for each patient individually, depending on the symptoms and diagnosis.

Indications for functional magnetic stimulation (FMS) are:

  • stress, urge and mixed urinary incontinence
  • incontinence after radical prostatectomy
  • fecal incontinence
  • postpartum regeneration
  • milder forms of prolapsed bladder and uterus
  • rehabilitation after pelvic surgery
  • chronic prostatitis
  • erectile dysfunction
