Epidural Steroid Injection (ESI)

What is epidural steroid injection (ESI) and what is it used for?

Epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure performed on patients who have symptoms of back and leg pain caused by conditions such as herniated disc, spinal canal stenosis, or nerve inflammation to relieve back and leg pain.

Epidural steroid injection (ESI) is used in the treatment of chronic pain in the spine, acute lumbar syndromes and lumbosychyalgia.

How is epidural steroid injection (ESI) performed?

This procedure usually uses a combination of corticosteroids and local anesthetic injected into the epidural space around the spinal nerves, which achieves local treatment of the cause of pain without systemic administration of drugs.

The approximate duration of the procedure is about 30 minutes.
