Vasectomy

A vasectomy is a surgical procedure in which the vas deferens (sperm ducts) are tied or cut, preventing sperm from passing from the testicles into the ejaculate and thereby permanently eliminating the possibility of fertilization. So, it is a permanent form of male contraception.

A vasectomy does not affect hormone levels, sexual function, erection or sexual satisfaction -the only difference is that the ejaculate no longer contains sperm.

Who are candidates for vasectomy?

All healthy men over the age of 35 are eligible for the procedure, which is the legally prescribed minimum age for undergoing a vasectomy.

This method of contraception is recommended for men who are certain they no longer wish to have children, as the possibility of restoring fertility afterward is limited and not always successful.

Preparation before a vasectomy

Before the procedure, a consultation with a urologist is required to receive all necessary information and perform any tests recommended by the physician.

On the day of the procedure, it is important to thoroughly wash the genital area and shave the scrotum to reduce the risk of infection.

What does the procedure look like?

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes, and recovery is quick, with minimal discomfort and rare complications.

What does recovery after a vasectomy look like?

Recovery after a vasectomy is typically quick and uncomplicated. Rest is recommended on the first day, along with the application of cold compresses and wearing comfortable but supportive underwear for the next two days. Most normal daily activities can be resumed after a few days, while more strenuous physical activities and sports should be avoided for about one week.

What are the benefits of a vasectomy?

  • A permanent and highly reliable form of contraception, with an effectiveness rate of over 99%.
  • A quick and minimally invasive procedure, performed in a short time with a minimal recovery period.
  • No impact on hormones, sexual function or pleasure, as the procedure does not alter testosterone levels or the ability to achieve erection and orgasm.
