Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence with Hyaluronic Filler

Stress urinary incontinence is a condition characterized by involuntary leakage of urine during physical activity that increases intra-abdominal pressure – such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising. In more severe cases, urine leakage may occur even during simple activities like standing up or walking.

The primary causes of this condition include weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments, which leads to descent of the urethra and bladder neck, as well as weakness within the urethral wall itself.

Procedure

The treatment of stress urinary incontinence through instillation of hyaluronic acid polymer into the urethra is performed endoscopically under cystoscopic guidance. Specifically, polycaprolactone is injected into the submucosal layer of the urethra using a special application needle.

Polycaprolactone is a highly biocompatible synthetic material with a gel-like consistency. After being injected into the urethral submucosa it adds volume to the tissue, thereby improving the coaptation of the urethral walls and preventing urine leakage during increased intra-abdominal pressure.

The procedure lasts between 15 and 30 minutes. After the operation, a short observation period of a few hours is required. Additionally, the physician will prescribe prophylactic antibiotic therapy for 3 days.

The procedure has a favorable safety profile with minimal risks and can be performed under local or general anesthesia.
