Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence with Urolon®

Stress urinary incontinence occurs when involuntary urine leakage happens during physical activities that increase abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising. In more severe cases, leakage may even occur during simple activities such as standing up or walking. The main causes include weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments, leading to descent of the urethra and bladder neck, as well as reduced support within the urethral wall itself.

Urolon® (polycaprolactone) is a biocompatible gel used for so-called “bulking” – augmentation of the tissue in the urethral wall. After being injected into the urethral submucosa, it adds volume and structural support, improving coaptation of the urethral walls and thereby preventing or significantly reducing urine leakage during abdominal strain. Polycaprolactone is fully biodegradable, with a degradation time of 12–24 months. Additionally, collagen formation occurs at the injection site, providing further support to the urethra, which in some cases ensures long-lasting continence even after the material has resorbed.

What does the procedure involve?

  • Duration: approx. 30 minutes
  • Anesthesia: local or short general (analgosedation)
  • Approach: endoscopic (through the natural opening), no incisions
  • Aftercare: brief observation for a few hours, with same-day discharge in most cases

Recovery and post-procedure recommendations

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity and sexual intercourse for 3–4 weeks
  • Regulate bowel movements
  • Most patients resume daily activities the same or the following day

When to expect results and how long do they last?

Most patients notice improvement immediately after the procedure, typically experiencing complete or near-complete resolution of stress incontinence. According to available studies, 70–80% of patients maintain results for at least 3–12 months, with effects potentially lasting 1–2 years or longer. Longevity depends on the individual rate of polycaprolactone degradation and the amount of newly formed collagen. If symptoms recur, the procedure can be repeated.

Safety and possible side effects

The procedure is minimally invasive and well tolerated. Temporary side effects may include:

  • Burning sensation during urination or increased frequency (1–3 days)
  • Mild hematuria (blood in urine) shortly after the procedure

Advantages of the procedure

  • No incisions, fast recovery
  • Avoidance of permanent synthetic implants (mesh/sling)
  • Repeatable if necessary
  • Immediate clinical effect

Who is a good candidate?

  • Women and men with mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence (including men after radical prostatectomy)
  • Patients wishing to avoid mesh surgery
  • Individuals seeking a quick return to work and daily activities

Note: Polycaprolactone application does not treat all types of incontinence. A thorough diagnostic evaluation is required to determine suitability.
