Prof. Nadan Rustemović, M.D., Ph.D.

He graduated on the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sarajevo in 1981. Internal medicine internship was completed at University Hospital Centre Zagreb from 1985. to 1989. Subspecialization fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology he attended at University Hospital Centre Zagreb from 1998. to 2000.

The title „ primarius” acquired  2001. He became an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zagreb in 2009 and a full time professor in 2016. he has been a scientific advisor since 2013.

He was an employee of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology University Hospital Centre Zagreb from March 1990. to Jaunary 1st 2023 as the head of the Center for Interventional Gastroenterology at  University Hospital Centre Zagreb and the Referral Center of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia for Interventional Gastroenterology (2013-2022). He is the head of the "Official ESGE Host Training Center" as part of the ESGE "fellowship grant program" since 2015.

He have been a member of the Central Ethics Commission of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia since 2012. He was the president of the Endoscopy Section of the Croatian Gastroenterology Society for two terms from 2013 to 2019. He is an associate member of the Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences since 2018, and from 2022 I am a regular member, where I hold the position assistant secretary.

He is also a member of the Croatian Gastroenterology Society, HLZ, ASGE (American Society of Gastroenterology), ESGE (European Society of Gastroenterology, European Crohn's and Colitis Organization (ECCO), European Pancreatic Club.

He is a reviewer in several journals such as World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Medicinski glasnik, Medicinski journal, Medicinski arhiv, Medica Jadertina, Collegium antropologicum, Acta medica Croatica, Liječnički vjesnik, Endoscopy.

The narrower field of his work is interventional gastroenterology. He introduced numerous new methods into clinical practice, such as: percutaneous pancreatography, percutaneous ethanol injection therapy, endoscopic placement of metal stents in the bilio-pancreatic tree, cholangioscopy, percutaneous biliary drainage, interventional endoscopic ultrasound, EUZ elastography, telemedicine consultations in gastroenterology, advanced endoscopic resection methods, hybrid operations (collaborative gastroenterology-surgery interventions), "in vivo" endoscopic characterization of neoplasms using a narrow-band spectrum (confocal endomicroscopy).

He is the chairman of the organizing committee of the annual workshop "Algorithms in gastrointestinal endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound" (2013-2022), which has been held continuously for the past twenty years, organized by the Department of Interventional Gastroenterology, University Hospital Centre Zagreb. He is the organizer of telemedicine educational lectures in co-organization with the Institute for Telemedicine of the Ministry of the Interior, and workshops on animal-mechanical models intended for endoscopist doctors and nurses/technicians.

He permanently participate in the role of tutor in the practical education of doctors and nurses at UEGW (United European Gastroenterology Week) in the field of endoscopy, i.e. ERCP, organized by ESGE and ESGENA.

Since 2013, he has been the organizer of "hands-on-training" workshops on mechanical-animal models, where gastroenterologists and nurses are educated in the most modern interventional procedures (ESD, EMR, RFA, EUS, ERCP, POEM). Due to the great interest even outside the borders of the Republic of Croatia, they have been organizing workshops on a monthly basis since 2015, which was also recognized by ESGE, so that the Department of Interventional Gastroenterology KBC Zagreb became an ESGE educational center in 2015, which in addition to the fact that it is also an Educational Center for nurses and technicians at ESGENA makes it the only such center in Europe..

He has an active participant in domestic and international congresses and professional meetings, with more than a hundred invited lectures, followed by congress announcements. published more than 100 papers in scientific journals, 33 of which are CC indexed.

He is the author and co-author of 25 textbooks from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb, two textbooks from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sarajevo and one from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Zagreb.

For thirty years, he has been participating in permanent training in endoscopy (gastroscopy, enteroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP) and ultrasonography of internists and gastroenterology specialists.
