Prof. Mihael Skerlev, M.D., Ph.D.
Prof. Mihael Skerlev, M.D., Ph.D. was born in Zagreb, Croatia, on February 20, 1958. He is the Attending Dermatovenereologist and Ordinary (Full) Professor of Dermatology and Venereology, Medical School, Zagreb University, Croatia for over 30 years. Additionally educated at the Department of Dermatology on Harvard University mostly with J.S. Dover and R.A. Johnson.
He introduced routine diagnostics of dermatomycoses in collaboration with a laboratory medical technician, introducing the cultivation of Malassezia furfur (Pityrosporum ovale) as a new laboratory diagnostic method based on his own modification of the nutrient medium.
Prof. Skerlev has authored over 140 publications, including more than 100 papers. He has actively participated in numerous scientific and professional conferences, mostly abroad, as a lecturer, invited speaker, moderator, president, vice-president, etc.
Prof. Skerlev is a member of numerous Societyes and Boards of restigious professional international forums within the scope of their specific field of expertise. Prof. Skerlev hold honorary membership in various societies and serve on the Editorial Boards of reputable international professional and scientific journals.
He is the founder and first president of the Croatian Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases within the Croatian Medical Association. Among other honors, he has been awarded the "Dr. Ladislav Rakovac" medal by the Croatian Medical Association, as well as the silver medal and plaque by the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) for promoting the fight against sexually transmitted diseases worldwide (in 2007 and 2012).
His primary areas of work include dermatological mycology and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), particularly HPV-related genital infections. His specific areas of activity encompass HPV-related genital infections, infections caused by the fungus Microsporum canis, as well as the cultivation of Malassezia furfur (Pityrosporum ovale).
