Prof. Marko Nikolić, M.D., Ph.D.
Professor Marko Nikolić, M.D., Ph.D. joined the team of the Center for Gastroenterology of St. Catherine Specialty Hospital in the middle of 2022.
He was born in 1972 in Zagreb. In 1997 he graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. After graduation, he worked in a clinical setting, while simultaneously finishing his scientific work in “Biomedicine and Healthcare” in 1999. He had finished his residency in Internal Medicine in 2004 at the Division of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital Centre „Sestre Milosrdnice“ Zagreb, Croatia, after which 2008 he finished his residency in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Department of gastroenterology and hepatology at the same hospital where he still works today as a gastroenterologist and runs the Daily gastroenterology hospital and the gastro-policlinic. In 2007 he had defended his master’s thesis at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb titled “Polymorphism of the ACE gene and renovascular disease” and in 2011 he defended his Ph.D. thesis at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb titled “The value of following levels of ghrelin and leptin in serum, with regards to evaluating treatment with an intragastric balloon and bariatric procedure.” Since 2009 he has been part of the Faculty at the School of Dentistry, University of Zagreb, Division of Internal Medicine, and reached the title of Assistant Professor.
In 2018 he was granted the title ‘Primarius’ from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatian, and in 2020 he was selected for the position of health advisor.
He has continued to improve his expertise in endoscopy and clinical nutrition by training in numerous centers across Croatia and abroad. Other areas of expertise include the treatment of obesity with a specific focus on steatohepatitis, colorectal and gastric carcinoma, noninvasive imaging techniques in gastroenterology, and treatment of Helicobacter pylori, for which he is a member of many international projects and registers, such as the European Registry on Helicobacter pylori Management (HP-EUReg). In 2013 he finished his fellowship in the field of clinical nutrition at the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ESPEN) in Germany.
He has published 42 scientific articles, of which 19 are indexed in Current Contents, as well as presented 70 abstracts at conferences. He is registered as an investigator at the Croatian Ministry of Science and has participated as the primary collaborator on three of their projects, such as “Treatment of obesity with intragastric balloons.” From 2010 to 2012 he has mentored 8 students for their thesis at the School of Dentistry, University of Zagreb. He is also the author/co-author of 6 articles in scientific review textbooks and university textbooks/manuals. He is a regular reviewer in five prestigious current contents (CC) journals (Obesity Surgery, Clinical Nutrition, European Journal of Nutrition, World Journal of Gastroenterology, World Journal of Clinical Cases), and several SCI expanded databases (Acta Clinica Croatica, Mini Reviews in Medicinal Chemistry, The Turkish Journal of Gastroenterology). From 2016 to 2018 he was an editor in the journal Endocrinology, Oncology, and Metabolism (EOM).
Professor Marko Nikolić, M.D., Ph.D. is a lecturer in several classes at the University of Zagreb (School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Kinesiology) and the School of Medicine at the Croatian Catholic University.
He is an active member of the Croatian Gastroenterological Society (HGD) and was the treasurer from 2019 to 2022. As a part of his involvement with HGD, he was also a member of numerous scientific and organizational committees, an invited lecturer, presiding and moderating various sections, and a reviewer of abstracts. He was the head of numerous courses and the president of the organizational committee of the postgraduate course of permanent medical training specialization titled “From problem to a quick solution, Daily gastroenterological clinic of the University Hospital Centre „Sestre Milosrdnice“ – a 5-year experience“, Zagreb, 2019. He was also head of the course/webinar of the Croatian Gastroenterological Society and the Department of gastroenterology and hepatology, University Hospital Centre „Sestre Milosrdnice“, Helicobacter pylori titled “From inflammation to carcinoma, Zagreb, 2021“. He is a member of the Croatian Board of Physicians, the Croatian Physicians Association, IASGO (International Association of Surgeons, gastroenterologists, and Oncologists), ECCO (European Crohn's and Colitis Organization), ESGE (European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy) and ESPEN (European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism), as well as a member of the management board of the Croatian Society for endocrinological oncology.
