Asst. prof. Tomislav Bokun, M.D., Ph.D.
Asst. prof. Tomislav Bokun, M.D., Ph. D., internal medicine specialist and gastroenterologist, graduated from the University of Zagreb School of Medical in 2006 and underwent PhD studies ‘Biomedicine and healthcare’ at the same faculty where he defended his thesis in the field of ultrasound elastography of the liver in 2017. He worked as a research assistant at Imperial College London for one year and also had postgraduate and post doctorate fellowships at prestigious endoscopic centre in Gemelli hospital, Rome, Italy, and in hepatology and ultrasound centre in MHH Hannover, Germany. He is the head of Interventional Endoscopy unit at the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Clinical Nutrition, University Hospital Dubrava, Zagreb.
In his clinical work he mostly performs endoscopy including advanced resection techniques as well as pancreato-biliary endoscopy. He was the first in Croatia and neighbouring countries to introduce laser lithotripsy for the treatment of intraductal biliary stones under the visual control during cholangioscopy. Various ultrasonography method including contrast-enhanced ultrasound and ultrasound elastography are field of his clinical and research interest.
He authored and co-authored scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals and is an invited speaker at many national and international scientific meetings. He is a trainer for the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and the organiser of the Adriatic ERCP Workshop that occurs yearly and deals with diagnostics and endoscopic therapy for pancreato-biliary diseases. He is a member of national and international gastroenterology, endoscopy and ultrasound organisations.
He teaches at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry of University of Zagreb and is associate at Postdoctoral studies in Gastroenterology at University of Zagreb School of Medicine.
From 2013 to 2016, he was a member of Young Talent Group and Public Affairs Committee of the major European gastroenterology society ‘United European Gastroenterology’. He is an active member of the Croatian Society of Gastroenterology where he served as the president of the Youth section from 2013 till 2019, and from 2022 he is the secretary of the society and the president of the Endoscopic section.
