Ivana Sabolić, MD, PhD
Ivana Sabolić, MD, PhD, finished the University of Zagreb School of Medicine (UZSM) in 2005. She completed her medical internship in the University Hospital Centre Zagreb (UHCZ) in 2007. After completing the internship, 2008-2010 she worked as a research assistant of the Croatian Ministry of Science and Education on the project "Allergotoxic Effects of General and Occupational Environment" at the Institute for Medical Research and Occupational Health (IMROH). At the IMROH, she also worked as a doctor in the national Poison Control Centre. In 2013, she completed post-graduate doctoral studies in "Biomedicine and Health Sciences" at the UZMS, and defended her doctoral thesis „Interaction of Filaggrin Gene Polymorphisms and Environmental Factors with Atopic Diseases in Young Adult Population“ in 2015.
Her training in pediatric surgery was conducted in the UHCZ 2010-2016, and she passed the specialist exam in 2016. As the pediatric surgery specialist, she continued to work in the UHCZ. Advanced education in pediatric surgery, including minimally invasive surgery, thoracic surgery, upper digestive surgery, neonatal surgery and pediatric urology was conducted at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH), Birmingham, UK as a Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Surgery. During her education and work at BCH, she gained extensive experience in open and minimally invasive surgical procedures in day case surgery and worked on a quality improvement project and implementation of a clinical care pathway in paediatric day case laparoscopic cholecystectomies, fundoplications and Heller myotomies.
She actively participated in a number of professional and scientific meetings, congresses and courses in Croatia and abroad and is the author or co-author of 20 papers published in indexed journals. She continuously collaborates with international experts in paediatric surgery and urology in order to conduct up-to-date management of complex surgical patients. She participated in several scientific research projects as a collaborator or lead. Currently, she leads the project on “Quality of Life and Long-term Outcomes of Management in Patients Born with Oesophageal Atresia” in the UHCZ, and collaborates in the international project for the improvement of quality of life in children born with oesophageal atresia "The second International EA-QOL initiative". She also participates in teaching undergraduate students of Medical Studies in English, and in the postgraduate programme for trainees in paediatric surgery at the UZSM.
She is a member of the Croatian Medical Chamber, Croatian Society of Pediatric Surgery (currently holding the position of vice-president) of Croatian Medical Association and General Medical Council (UK).
She strongly supports teamwork and professional and scientific collaboration of paediatric surgeons at the national and international level, as well as collaboration with other health care professionals and patient/parent support groups, as this is the basis for enhancing knowledge and experience, and improving management of all patients in accordance with the current medical standards.
