Prof. Mihael Skerlev, M.D., Ph.D.

Prof. Mihael Skerlev, M.D., Ph.D. is one of the leading experts in this field. Born in Zagreb, he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb and further specialized at the prestigious Harvard University in the USA. For over 30 years, he has been teaching students and educating physicians in dermatology, venereology, general medicine, maternal and child health care, and infectology. What sets him apart is his contribution to diagnosing fungal infections – he developed a new method for identifying the Malassezia furfur fungus, which causes skin conditions such as flaking and redness. Prof. Skerlev is the author of more than 140 scientific papers and an active participant in international medical conferences, often delivering lectures and participating in expert discussions. He is a member of prestigious international medical organizations and editorial boards of scientific journals. He founded and led the Croatian Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases and has received numerous awards, including the "Dr. Ladislav Rakovac" medal and recognitions from the international organization IUSTI for combating sexually transmitted diseases. His main research areas include HPV genital infections and fungal diseases, particularly those caused by Microsporum canis and Malassezia furfur.
