Tattoo and scar removal
Scars can affect the appearance of our bodies regardless of where they are located. They can develop differently and vary in shape, color and appearance. Scars are usually the result of an injury or surgical procedure and they may interfere with the body’s normal function or cause limited movement due to skin tension and contraction.
Regardless of how a scar originated, it is altered skin tissue that often requires treatment. While complete disappearance of the scar may not be possible, its prominence, visibility and tension can be significantly reduced.
How to prepare for scar and/or tattoo removal?
All detailed information regarding scars, tattoos and their removal methods will be provided during consultations at our Center for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Two to three days before and after the procedure it is important to avoid medications that reduce blood viscosity (please consult your general practitioner beforehand).
What does a scar and/or tattoo removal procedure look like?
In some cases, it is sufficient to excise the small area of skin affected by the scar or tattoo, followed by fine suturing. Certain scars can be corrected with a simple excision or by using various plastic surgery techniques. In the case of larger scars and tattoos, multiple procedures may be required to achieve the best possible result.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, which means that only the area containing the scar or tattoo is anesthetized. After the procedure and removal of the scar or tattoo, it is very important that the patient strictly follows all instructions provided by the physician.
What does recovery look like after scar and/or tattoo removal?
Recovery after the procedure usually takes between one to two weeks, depending on the size and location of the scar or tattoo. Sutures are typically removed 7 to 10 days after the procedure. If large scars or tattoos are involved, more precautions are necessary.
Regular follow-up visits and dressing changes are essential, as recommended by the doctor. To ensure optimal healing patients should avoid strenuous activities. After the sutures are removed, the operated areas should be treated with scar-prevention creams as advised by the surgeon and it is important to begin the cream treatment on time to prevent new scar formation.
