Psychological counseling in health psychology

Counseling psychology is a specialty of applied psychology that uses a wide range of evidence-based practices to help individuals improve their health and overall well-being, prevent and/or alleviate adjustment difficulties and problems, resolve crises, and increase their ability to function more effectively in their lives.

Stress management

It focuses particularly - but not exclusively - on normative lifespan development, with an emphasis on prevention, education, enhancement, and personal growth. Specifically, counseling psychologists focus on developmental and mental health issues and the challenges individuals face throughout the lifespan.

Health psychology examines how biological, social, and psychological factors influence health and illness. It deals with the complex and multidimensional influences on the human experience in understanding physical health. Health psychologists use psychological science to promote health and prevent disease. A key aspect of the counseling psychologist’s role in a healthcare setting is providing counseling or other forms of intervention for those in need, offering meaningful support across all levels of patient functioning—physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral.
