Dermabrasion for facial scarring

Scar dermabrasion is a procedure that removes the top layers of skin to improve the appearance of the scar. This procedure involves the use of a special device that uses rapid rotation of solid particles to quickly and precisely remove the outer layer of skin.

How is dermabrasion for facial scarring performed?

The procedure usually takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on the size and severity of the scar.

During the surgical procedure, the skin is first thoroughly cleaned and then local anesthesia is applied to reduce discomfort. After the anesthesia is applied, plastic surgeon will use a dermabrasion device to remove the top layer of skin and smooth the surface of the scar.

What does recovery look like?

After the procedure, the treated area may be swollen and red, and the patient should avoid exposure to the sun and apply lotion to protect the skin. It is necessary to pay attention to the treatment area, because the skin is very sensitive during the recovery period.

What are the results after dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion of a scar usually gives good results, but sometimes the procedure needs to be repeated to achieve optimal results. Therefore, patients should talk with their plastic surgeon to determine which procedure is best for their specific situation.
