Acne treatment

Acne are a common, chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland. This leads to blockage and enlargement of the follicles, creating a favorable environment for the accumulation of Cutibacterium acnes bacteria and the subsequent development of inflammation.

Acne treatment

They most often appear on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back. Since acne can vary in form and severity, understanding the different types is essential for choosing the most appropriate treatment approach.

Types of acne

The initial inflammatory process results in microcomedones, tiny changes that are not visible to the naked eye but can only be detected histologically. These represent the first stage of acne formation, and without their presence other retention lesions do not develop. Therefore, targeting microcomedones is crucial for maintenance therapy and the prevention of further skin changes.

Clinically visible lesions include:
  • Open comedones (blackheads) - one of the most common types of acne. They are easily recognized by small dark dots that appear on the face, chest or back. They form when pores become clogged with a combination of sebum (the skin’s natural oil) and dead skin cells.
  • Closed comedones (whiteheads) - the most frequent type of skin imperfection. They are recognizable as small, white bumps on the skin’s surface and are caused by clogged hair follicles.
  • Papules - inflammatory lesions that appear as small, red bumps on the skin’s surface. Unlike whiteheads and blackheads, papules form when the follicle wall becomes inflamed and ruptures, usually due to the buildup of sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells.
  • Pustules - inflammatory lesions that look similar to papules but contain pus in the center. They usually have a white or yellowish head, with the surrounding skin red and inflamed.
  • Nodules and cysts - the most severe form of acne, characterized by large, painful lumps that form deep beneath the skin’s surface. They develop due to intense inflammation within the hair follicle, rupture and merging with neighboring follicles, resulting in hard, inflamed nodules. Because of their depth and severity, they significantly increase the risk of scarring, so early and intensive treatment is essential.

Acne treatment

Whether acne appears occasionally and mildly, for example due to hormonal changes, or becomes painful, persistent and long-lasting, visiting a dermatologist should be one of the first steps. Professionally guided therapy is key to successful treatment and preventing permanent skin damage.

Therapy selection – acne

The choice of therapy depends on the severity of the condition, the type of predominant lesions, the tendency to develop scars, psychological aspects of the disease and the results of previous treatments.

At St. Catherine Skin & Regenerative Clinic, acne treatment is based on a comprehensive, holistic approach. The first step involves an Observ analysis, which provides a detailed insight into the condition and needs of the facial skin. Based on the clinical findings, an individualized treatment plan is created. This may include targeted treatments, topical and oral medications, as well as recommendations for appropriate dermocosmetics and dietary supplements (such as vitamins and probiotics), according to each patient’s specific needs.

It is important to note that there are various treatments for acne and acne scars, including:
  • Microdermabrasion – a mechanical exfoliation treatment that removes dead skin cells and stimulates skin regeneration without damage, making the skin firmer, smoother and more even.
  • Chemical peel – a treatment that removes dead skin cells using active acids to improve texture, tone and appearance while providing anti-inflammatory and regenerative effects.
  • Laser treatment for acne – a procedure that reduces the activity of the sebaceous glands and controls excessive sebum production, while also destroying the bacteria that cause inflammation and the formation of pimples.
  • Photobiomodulation therapy - a non-invasive treatment performed in combination with chemical peels, photosensitive serums and HDD lamps to treat acne and promote skin regeneration.
  • Emfusion - a non-invasive therapy that not only instantly improves the skin’s appearance but also strengthens, restores and protects its natural barrier over time, while helping regulate calcium balance in the epidermis.
  • Microneedling – a minimally invasive treatment that helps reduce scarring and promote skin regeneration.
  • Radiofrequency microneedling (EXION RF) - a minimally invasive procedure that combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy. This technique creates microchannels in the skin while delivering RF energy deep into the dermis, stimulating collagen and elastin production to improve skin texture and firmness.
  • Cold laser therapy - provides antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and drainage effects, reduces sebum production, and promotes tissue regeneration.
  • Ultrasound Basic – a technology that uses ultrasonic waves to stimulate mechanical, physical and chemical processes within the skin, restoring hydration, freshness and elasticity.
  • Skin boosters – injectable, minimally invasive treatments containing amino acids, hyaluronic acid and polynucleotides that repair damaged cells and help the skin retain moisture, resulting in visibly smoother, firmer skin while reducing scars and wrinkles.

Laser acne treatment

Laser acne treatment is a modern, safe and effective method for reducing inflammation, regulating the activity of sebaceous glands, and improving the appearance of the skin.

It is a minimally invasive and safe procedure that can be combined with other acne therapies. For the best results, multiple treatment sessions are usually required, spaced several weeks apart.

The treatment is intended for individuals with inflammatory acne, regardless of severity, as well as for those whose skin is prone to breakouts and inflammatory changes.

At St. Catherine Skin & Regenerative Clinic, we care for your skin’s health through a personalized approach and advanced treatment methods. By combining medical therapies, professional skincare and education on proper skincare routines, we help you achieve healthy, acne-free skin.
