Neurogenic Bladder

Neurogenic bladder refers to improper bladder function, where the bladder does not empty correctly. This condition is caused by nerve damage to the bladder. The damage may be congenital, such as from a defect in the spinal cord area (myelomeningocele), or acquired, such as from an injury. Most cases of neurogenic bladder can be treated with medications, physical therapy, and intermittent catheterization, while a smaller portion of children with this condition may require major reconstructive surgery. The goal of treatment is to improve bladder function, prevent urinary tract infections and kidney damage, and ensure an acceptable quality of life for the patient.
