Abdominal Wall Defects – Gastroschisis, Omphalocele
Gastroschisis and omphalocele are congenital abdominal wall defects that occur during fetal development, resulting in the protrusion of internal organs outside the abdomen.
Gastroschisis
Gastroschisis is a congenital defect in which the fetus's intestines protrude from the abdomen through an opening on the side of the abdominal wall, usually to the right of the umbilicus, without a protective membrane. This condition requires immediate surgical intervention after birth to return the intestines to the abdominal cavity.
Omphalocele
Omphalocele is a congenital defect in which the intestines, liver, or other organs protrude through the umbilical opening but are covered by a protective membrane. Depending on the size of the omphalocele, surgical intervention may be required to return the organs to the abdominal cavity.
