Tonsil and adenoid vegetation surgery in children
Surgical treatment of tonsils and adenoid vegetations in children is one of the most common surgical procedures in childhood. The operation can include only adenoidectomy and only tonsillectomy (removal of tonsils) but also tonsilloadenoidectomy (removal of both tonsils and adenoids in the same act). Indications for surgery are set in children who have difficulty breathing through the nose, snoring and have frequent tonsillitis. Also candidates for surgery are children who have sleep apnea and bad breath.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia. After the adenoidectomy children go home the same day and after the tonsilloadenoidectomy they stay in the hospital for one night. Parents are given detailed instructions on diet and analgesia after surgery. The expected duration of pain is 10-14 days.
