WHY SHOULD YOU DO A GENERAL MEDICAL SCREENING EXAMINATION?
Unhealthy lifestyle, improper diet, stress, smoking, and insufficient physical activity are considered to be risk factors for developing several different illnesses. Increased frequency of elevated blood pressure, headaches, excessive body weight and increased blood fats lead to blood vessels damage, myocardial infarction, heart failure, and stroke. Often, the risk factors for these illnesses, otherwise latent for months and years, are discovered during a general medical examination.
The success of treatment and prognosis for malignant diseases (prostate cancer in men, breast and uterine cancer in women, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer) depend on early detection of the disease. However, they often develop without any obvious symptoms. In addition to genetic predisposition, we also consider different lifestyles, eating habits, physical (in)activity, smoking, and chronic illnesses as risk factors for the development of malignant diseases. Regular medical screenings allow for timely detection of certain malignant changes (eg. determination of PSA concentration in men, examination and breast ultrasound in women or targeted diagnosis in family members of a person suffering from cancer).
WHEN SHOULD YOU DO A GENERAL MEDICAL EXAMINATION?
It is recommended to perform a general medical examination once a year or once in two years, depending on the age, health status or the existence of risk factors. Older age, chronic illness, family history and the existence of other risk factors justify more frequent general screenings.
