How to Prepare for 3D Mammography (Breast Tomosynthesis)?
There are no special preparations compared to classic mammography, but it is important to note that the imaging is significantly more comfortable, because the pressure on the breast is reduced and is performed in a single act. Imaging is done in a standing position and it is necessary to relax in order to reduce the discomfort during the pressure of the breasts in the device, but also to get clearer images.
All women are suitable for tomosynthesis since the indications for examination are the same as with classical mammography. Women with dense breast tissue are advised to do tomosynthesis.
What does the imaging look like?
During the imaging, the X-ray tube moves around the breast in an arc, and the information/images are processed by a special computer and high-resolution 3D images are obtained. This minimizes the "overlap" of tissue and pathological changes, which is otherwise impossible to avoid in classical two-dimensional mammography. This is especially important in dense breasts where a normal breast gland can hide pathological changes. With tomosynthesis, the number of false-negative findings (unrecorded breast tumors), as well as the number of false-positive findings decreases. The examination itself takes only 20 to 30 minutes.
How to prepare for the examination?
• The best time to have an examination is 5-12 days after the first day of menstruation.
• No special clothing is required.
• Tell the radiologist technician if you have any problems.
• Be sure to bring previous medical records for review.
